DNRGPS will not run
(This may be a duplicate. I can't find my first ticket which had no summary line)
On first execution I imported properties and got the success message. Moved the DNRGPS window onto my second screen and looked away to the test script. On returning to the screen the window is gone and the program does not show in Task Manager.
Re-launch produces no visible result.
Machine rebooted, no change.
Change to run with laptop display only, no change.
My machine is an Acer Aspire 2920 laptop with Vista Home Premium SP1. .Net4 Client Profile already installed.
Further testing not possible.

The DNRGPS was initially installed on my D: partition. I have moved the whole folder to C: and started again. The first-time-through dialogue appears, the main window opens but after about 2 seconds closes.
It again will not restart either by double-click or by right-click and run as administrator.

When checking for it in your Task Manager, does it show in the Processes tab?
Do you have a DNRGPS_log.txt file in your users folder (on Windows 7 this is located at C:\users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\DNRGPS). I'm not exactly sure where it would be on Vista. To figure out where it is go to your Start Button --> Run and type in %APPDATA%.

There is no sign of DNRGPS in the process tab.
That log file is just where you suggest and contains the following lines

Could you delete the C:\users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\DNRGPS folder (the whole folder) and start DNRGPS again. This time, when prompted to import settings from DNRGarmin say "NO". We'll see if that's the culprit.
Also, are you in the US or elsewhere? Any other "special" settings we should know about? Do you have another machine you could test with to see if this issue is computer specific or broader?

Chris,
I've deleted that folder and relaunched DNRGPS but have had no success. The folder was not recreated.
In an attempt to recreate my move from D: to C: I've plugged in an external drive and copied the dnrgps folder to a G: drive. Launching from here I get the same behaviour. It rdisplays the splash screen and asks me to import settings. I said no this time. The main app window displayed for a few seconds then closed. The log file has reappeared with the following contents
DNRGPS LogFile Starting: 17/01/2012 20:35:11
17/01/2012 20:35:03 - gdal_csharp - The type initializer for 'OSGeo.GDAL.GdalPINVOKE' threw an exception. - SetupGDAL
I'm not aware of anything 'special' on my laptop. It runs DNRGarmin fine. But outside of a controlled corporate environment every PC is in a class of 1. I live in UK where it's now 8:30pm. I have a company laptop but won't be able to connect a GPS device so I'll see if I can use my wife's PC for a while and have another go.
Respond in the next 3 hours if you're to catch me again today.

I've just noticed that on your download page ( http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/mis/gis/DNRGPS/DNRGPS.html ) on your compatibility list you do not include Vista. I wonder if this is deliberate or an oversight. I'm on a Vista laptop.
For various reasons I've not been able to try on any other PC this evening.

The compatibility list didn't include Vista due to an oversight. That being said we don't have any Vista machines at our disposal for testing so can't confirm that it'll work.
It is having issues registering some files -- probably an issue setting a few environment variables. I'll be interested to know if it works on your wife's PC.

This bug is related to others that I've seen. It is having trouble registering some pieces of the app. Once I get it resolved for one it should be resolved for all.
The next beta release will have more information in the LOG file that will give me better clues as to what is going haywire.
Thanks for all the testing!

I'm afraid that the new version behaves just like the old. Launches, copies properties, loads main window briefly and dies, never to be revived.
I'm afraid I don't have much time for further experimental work today.

Feb 6 with the latest latest version and the only progress I can see is that, after copying previous settings, it takes a couple of seconds longer than previously before the DNRGPS window closes and refuses to come back. DNRGarmin 5.4.1 still works but my laptop seems to be running slower.
Sorry Chris, bit of a bummer.

chpoulio,
I am having a similar issue. I have upgrede to 2.08 and stil get a similar error ( see below )
DNRGPS LogFile Starting: 20/02/2012 3:42:10 PM

20/02/2012 3:42:10 PM - gdal_csharp - The type initializer for 'OSGeo.GDAL.GdalPINVOKE' threw an exception. - SetupGDAL
The program loads, however i am unable to save any tracks / waypoints as a shape file for Arcgis. The strange thing is , i hav this program at home and it works perfectly ( so i copied it and the log file etc to the relevant places and still no joy ).. Both machines are running XP pro with no other programs open.

Will try other laptops in office today ( work pcs use novell client, also tried running when logged in as a workstation with no network connected ), Have admin rights the same as the XP machine at home ( also tried run as ) and still no change. Yesterday i did a registry check and deleted all entries for DNRGPS, and then reloaded the latest DNRGPS and still no change. Will report back ASAP

I put a test executable out at http://www.assembla.com/spaces/dnrgps/documents/cjv2qKxver4AZkacwqjQWU/download/cjv2qKxver4AZkacwqjQWU
Save to your DNRGPS folder (back up your existing dnrgps.exe file first).
Could you try it out to see if you get the same errors?

chpoulio,
I'm having the same problem on my work computer. Running Vista, no admin rights, government computer. Tried both v. 6.0.0.8 and the new v. 6.0.1.1. Interestingly enough, I installed DNRGPS just fine on my personal laptop running Windows 7 Premium and successfully connected/downloaded my work gps unit (Garmin 62s). All went smoothly. Unfortunately I do not have ArcGIS on my personal computer and really don't want to bring my work home with me. :)

Hello all,
I had similar problems as discussed in parts of this ticket, and elsewhere, and I think I finally found the problem! I suspect that the issue has something to do with the Environment Path(s) not being set correctly? I know in the older versions of windows there was a limit to the Path length and I have a lot of programs installed so I imagine mine is pretty long. Anyhow, what I ended up doing that fixed the problem for me was to go into the dnrgps\GDAL\bin folder and copied the dll files there and pasted them into the root of the dnrgps folder - i.e. same folder where the dnrgps.exe file is located. This seemed to work on my end! I also slectively deleted each dll that I copied - restarting the program each time - until I narrowed it down to the "libeay32.dll" file which seems to be the one causing my problem. So you may only have to copy that file, but I decided to keep all of them in the new location just in case it is the PATH issue and the program needs to access one of the others... There may be a better way to do this, and I'd be interested in knowing if anyone else finds a solution, but after MUCH searching on this site and others, and some experimenting on 5 different machines this worked for me! Hope it helps...

Well done Mark. Having given up on DNRGPS I've copied all the .dll
files up to the DNRGPS folder and all problems are gone (after a very
short test).
Well done again.
