DNRGPS Exception Error: Type Initializer *PINVOKE
DNRGPS Ticket Request: Exception Error: Type Initializer *PINVOKE
I am with the USDA Forest Service and am encountering errors regarding the new DNRGPS program. The errors revolve around a Type Initializer command.
The following were encountered:
ogr_csharp: 'OSGeo.OGR OgrPINVOKE'
gdal_csharp: 'OSGeo.GDAL GdalPINVOKE'
'OSGeo.OSR OsrPINVOKE'
I have a Windows XP machine, IBM Lenovo Thinkcentre workstation. (see following thread)
I did try DNRGPS on my personal Windows 7 laptop with no errors (no GIS software on it). I tried it on one of the our HP computers (with limited additional software installed) and also had no errors. It could be a possible software conflict. I have also considered the possibility of reinstalling .NET 4 to see if it would make a difference.
I downloaded the program again and still encountered the same error. It turns out that it is setting the projection (I just wasn't picking up on where that information was being displayed). When selecting a projection, no projection description is displayed.
I was able to connect to my GPSmap 60C but I am getting the exception error on every operation. It does not appear to be downloading my waypoint data. The GPS says data transferred but no data appears in the table. The exception error pops up and the Waiting dialog stays up until the exception error is closed (which was hidden under the Waiting window; it took me a while to figure that out).

Another key function that does not seem to be working for me is loading from a file, particularly a shapefile. I have tried several files that came from Garmin data I previously collected. I get the exception error.
My system is:
IBM Lenovo Desktop Thinkcentre

I saw the same errors Mark described on 3 of the 4 PCs I tested over the weekend. Don't know if it is diagnostic or not, but the PC with ArcGIS 10 installed had no issues...at least not yet...
Also, I can't get the dll for Regan Sarwas' GPX plugin for ArcGIS 10 to register. Has anyone else had success with that?

All the errors mentioned in this ticket are referenced in tickets #133, 49, and 122. They are all related to not being able to register a few temporary environment variables. I'll definitely be putting more time into this one due to the severity of the problem.
I've put a new copy of the dnrgps.exe out at http://www.assembla.com/spaces/dnrgps/documents/download/aQpiasyvKr4BpAacwqjQXA
For the machines that are getting the PINVOKE error copy this file to your DNRGPS folder -- back up the existing dnrgps.exe file first.
Run dnrgps.exe. It probably won't fix the problem but will give us more info in the dnrgps_log.txt file located at one of these locations:
Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\AppData\DNRGPS
Windows 7: C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\DNRGPS
Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\My Documents\DNRGPS
Windows 7: C:\Users\<username>\My Documents\DNRGPS
The information in your log file will look something like the text below. It is a list of all the environment variables and config options (gdal specific) that need to be set for the PINVOKE to perform properly.

Chris,
I installed the Visual C 2010 package but that did not fix the problem. Attached is my latest logfile. I have also attached some logfiles from Carl Beyerhelm.

Hi Mark.
Thanks for passing this on. I haven’t explored my way around the ticket system yet, so I wasn’t sure if I could attach items to your existing ticket or not…so I’m just sending them to you.
Anyway, I ran a process log for a PCs where DNRGPS works, and one where it fails, and have attached both logs. The notable items are 3 environment variables that go undefined in the failed process. See below.
%C:\WINDOWS%\system32

%C:\WINDOWS%\System32\Wbem
I also attached the system specs and env variables for the failed system.

Everything I can find about this error makes it sound like it is related to a Microsoft Redistributable package.
Did you restart after installing that package?
Could you open your list of installed Programs on a machine that works and one that doesn't work and check for programs that start with: "Microsoft Visual C++". Do you notice any differences between the two machines?
Thanks a bunch for the help. I really appreciate it!

Chris,
I am pretty sure I rebooted when I installed Visual C 2010, but I went ahead and rebooted again. I am getting the same error so the installation did not help.
Carl Beyerhelm had the same result as well, it did not work.

I notice that the screen shot by andybill on Feb 28th that he has Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributables. The screen shots you've posted have 2005 and 2010 but not 2008. I wonder if this could be the issue? DNRGPS was compiled in 2010 but a couple of the external pieces may have been compiled in 2008.
Here is a link to those 2008 redistributables:

Here is a link to those 2008 redistributables:

Hard to say. You would think if that was the case and certain code that was needed came out in 2008, that it would also be included in the 2010 version. I did not have 2010 until you suggested installing it. Previously only had the 2005.

Of the 3 PCs that I have access to at work, here is the breakdown of their DNRGPS status and Microsoft Visual C 2005 Redistributable version.
None of the PCs have 2008 or 2010 versions.
Of the 2 PCs that have only the Microsoft Visual C 2005 Redistributable, Version 8.0.61001, one works and one doesn’t. Go figure…
HP EliteBook 6930p
DNRGPS works J
Microsoft Visual C 2005 Redistributable, Version 8.0.61001
Lenovo 8816-AH1
DNRGPS works J
Microsoft Visual C 2005 Redistributable, Versions 8.0.59193 and 8.0.61001
Lenovo T60p
DNRGPS does NOT work L

Do you still want me to try to 2008 install? I think I saw one of the others involved (Carl or Andrew) tried it and it did not work.

My machine also has Windows XP SP3. It is a Lenovo as well, but a desktop.
Incidentally Carl, I tried the upload to my 60C from a shapefile to the various both the Saved Tracks and Active Log and here are my results:
1) With a shapefile containing Named tracks and active log tracks, Uploaded to NAMED Tracks and the result was the all tracks uploaded with the named tracks loaded into Named and the Active Log track loaded into Active Log.
2) With a shapefile containing Named tracks and active log tracks, Uploaded tracks into ACTIVE LOG and the result was ALL tracks in the table (named or not) were renamed ACTIVE LOG and then loaded into the Active Log track on the GPS. If I wanted to restore the named tracks, I either had to reload from the original shapefile or manually rename the tracks in the table.

Oh, and another thing I noticed, DNRGPS did not seem to handle importing shapefiles containing large amounts of records very well. In my test on a Windows 7 laptop, I imported trails data for the San Juan NF into DNRGPS, which ended up generating 188,000 records in the table (although the old DNRGarmin program maxed out well before this). Attempting to select records to trim/delete would amount to waiting many, many minutes or even locking up the program.
Is there a rule-of-thumb regarding the maximum number or records that should be expected to comfortably work with?

If not done already, it may be good to know how many of these PINVOKE tickets are being generated from USFS folks or not as well as whether they are on Lenovo computers or not, if that matters, to see if there is a pattern.
I just received a message from one of the folks taking the Fire GIS training in CA and they are USFS and have a Lenovo as well.

Happens to all various PCs running XP SP 3 at my work ( NOW uses HP laptops, Desktops ). Have 1 success, my home Pc running XP Pro SP3 ( have taken screen shots and both PCs have which appear to have the same software ). Admin rights on all machines. Just hope it gets sorted soon.

Raquel,
The latest test download can be found in ticket 133.
I definitely think having the 2008 C++ Redistributables installed is important. One person claims this fixed his error.
I tweaked the EXE based on another suggestion so also test the dnrgps.exe I put in ticket 133 -- http://www.assembla.com/spaces/dnrgps/documents/axcTlOCN0r4yUtacwqjQWU/download/axcTlOCN0r4yUtacwqjQWU

Chris as you can see from my screenshots above, both of my machines have 2008 C++ installed. The top screenshot is my own personal PC with XP Pro running on which DNRGPS works perfectly, the second is my work lappy that runs XP Pro that generates all the errors. The work machine has 2008 C++ ( slightly different version though 9.0.37029.6161 and dosent have the 9.0.21022, I will install the later from you're post in ticket 135 and get back to you ).

Hi Chris, here's another US Forest Service person chiming in with the 'ogr_csharp - OSGeo.OGR.OgrPINVOKE' error. This is on a laptop running ArcGIS 9.3 and I believe it still has DNRGarmin installed on it as well. I've successfully used DNRGPS on other agency laptops and desktops with no problems (they were all running Arc10). I don't know what version of the Microsoft c++ is on that laptop, but I could find out if need be. Thanks.

If this hasn't been resolved here is another piece to the puzzle.
One of my co workers has DNR Garmin 5.0.4 and I have DNR Garmin 5.1.1. We both have DNR GPS 6.0. Both machines are nearly identical as far as installed softare goes. His works properly no errors mine however has error messages pop up. I wonder if there are not some files that are missing when installed. This also happens when you look for a coordinate system.
