Comments not showing on front page

The number of comments a post has aren't displayed on the index page.
As far as I can tell, the code in mobile_pack_base/index.php doesn't do anything.

    if ($comments_link) {
      print ' | ';
      comments_popup_link('No comments', '1 comment', '% comments');
    }


The page should display
"Posted in <whatever> | Edit <if logged in> | <X> Comments"
Currently only "posted in" and "Edit" are shown.

Happy to be corrected if I'm wrong!

The template was using a variable $comments_link that is never set. Now is forced to always print, as long as admin has chosen to show metadata, of course.
