Can't install Eclipse plugin ("requires plug-in org.eclipse.pde.runtime")
Migrated from http://lampsvn.epfl.ch/trac/scala/ticket/322
Reporter akoller
I'm trying to install the Scala Eclipse plugin using Help/Software Updates/Find and Install on Eclipse 3.3.1.1 under MacOS 10.4.11 running Apple Java 1.5.0_13. When I search for updates, the only version of the Scala plugin that Eclipse finds is "Scala Development Tools (JDK 1.5 non-BETA/Eclipse 3.2 only) 2.6.5". When I select this feature, Eclipse displays an error message saying that the feature "requires plugin-in org.eclipse.pde.runtime" and won't allow me to install it. Why?
In case it helps, I have attached my Eclipse configuration details.

As a workaround, Eclipse 3.2.2 for OS X is available here:
http://mirror.calvin.edu/eclipse/downloads/drops/R-3.2.2-200702121330/download.php?dropFile=eclipse-SDK-3.2.2-macosx-carbon.tar.gz

Replying to inigo:
Yes, it seems to work fine on Eclipse 3.2.2; thanks for the hint. But the plugin should still work with Eclipse 3.3, right? Especially given that the website even says that the plugin requires 3.3.

Hi,
Some observations:
- installing Scala on Eclipse 3.3 classic works
- installing Scala on Eclipse 3.3 "Java IDE" doesn't work because of missing pluing org.eclipse.pde.runtime
- installing Scala on Eclipse 3.3 "Java IDE" with org.eclipse.pde.runtime in the plugins doesn't work because still a missing dependency is claimed (though the plugin is loaded)
- copying all plugins + org.eclipse.pde.runtime from classic to "Java IDE" works just fine.
I don't get that. Where does the installer look for the required plugins?

Who knows. At any rate, only Classic is required, whatever version of Eclipse you use. I'd like to eliminate the PDE dependency someday, but it will probably come from someone else who knows how to do this better than me.
