track file depth data issue
Dear developers,
I have been using Garmin GPS map 76 series handheld units integrated with a Humminbird SI system to obtain detailed records of depth in streams and lakes at 3 second intervals. I just discovered an odd problem that I am troubleshooting, but it is leaving me stumped at the moment. I just started using version 6.0.0.5 (previously was using 5.04.0001) of the DNRGPS program. When I download a trackfile from the Garmin with version 6 no depth data appears in the column next to altitude. When I download the same file from the very same unit with version 5.04 the depth data is present in the column next to altitude. Under track properties in both versions I have checked the box for depth. In other words, the depth data is contained within the Garmin track file, but version 6.0.0.5 is failing to read the data into the file during download. Has anyone reported this problem? Any suggestions?
Thanks for your help,

Windows 7 (64-bit)
I downloaded most recent version of DNRGPS 6.0.0.11. This version exhibits same problem as previous 6.x version I tested- when downloading an existing track file from Garmin GPS map 76CSx that contains depth records, no depth is read into the depth column (only altitude values in the altitude column). There is no statistical relationship between altitude and depth, therefore this is not a substitution problem. This same trackfile downloaded with version 5.4.1 contains the correct depth data in depth column. File saved as text can be uploaded to v 6.0.0.11 and depth data is displayed in depth column. I am left to conclude that v 6.x fails to read existing depth data from a Garmin GPSmap 76CSx software version 3.70. Please inform if a solution exists, and notify the community of users as this represents a significant loss of functionality that previously existed with version 5.4.1 and source of potential dat a loss.

Adam,
I combined your 2nd ticket with the first to keep this thread together.
Could you do the following:
Download your track points from the 76 using DNRGPS 6.0.0.11
Find the following file and attach it to this ticket -- C:\Users\<yourusername>\AppData\Roaming\DNRGPS\dnrgps_temp.gpx

Chris,
The track file (text format) I have uploaded to this ticked was downloaded by version 6.0.0.5, but looks exactly like the file downloaded by version 6.0.0.11,... I did not save a second copy in 6.0.0.11 and have now cleared the track log. I also have a file created by downloading using v. 5.4.1 from the same GPS that shows the depth data. Let me know if you'd like that one too.

think i got it this time, have to step away for a couple hours
Unfortunately, it looks like Depth is not coming through at all for the 76 (and other old models). We're using a different 3rd party back end engine for uploading/downloading to the old Garmins -- and by old I mean doesn't show up as a drive in windows explorer when plugged in. This engine has many advantages over the old one but also a couple disadvantages (you found one). There are a couple options for you:
- Continue to use DNRGarmin for that 76 unit for transferring data back and forth.
- Upgrade to a new GPS
- Check out Garmin's free program called BaseCamp to see if it does what you need.

Chris, Thanks for looking into this. In a sense I am glad to know its not something on this end. The Garmin GPSmap76CSx is not a very old model, nonetheless we can and will continue to use version 5.4.1 to retreive depth data. I frequently instruct and provide advice to colleauges involved with sonar habitat mapping projects, and one of the common data sets gathered is depth for bathymetric mapping. I will notify others about this issue, and suggest posting a warning to users on your website. We lost 3 field days of depth data (not a big deal), but I cringe to think of what might have been lost had we not noticed this when we did. We rely heavily on your software for the work we do, and for your contributions to this field I thank you greatly.
