DB.runQuery and runUpdate need common type handling refactored

The fix for ticket #582 introduced some copy/paste code. This should be fixed to avoid maintenance issues in the future.

Closes #609

At least three methods were using the same code. Hopefully
this will help us avoid bugs in the future if we have to make
modifications.
