Interface Design Goals

Simplicity

Don't overwhelm the user, but don't assume that they are retarded. Start with one knob to play with, but show them how they can add more. Don't ask for things now that they can tell you later. Hint at what is around them, but let them initiate for the full story. Give the user a direct route where possible.

Discoverability

Helping the user discover is one of the core interface design goals.

Flexibility

When assumptions are made, let the user have final word.
