I wasted over an hour troubleshooting problems creating a Scala project from a Maven archetype. Ultimately I discovered that I needed the m2eclipse-scala plug-in installed in Eclipse.
Scala IDE should just assume that people are going to be using Maven, because m2Eclipse is now a standard part of Eclipse. Consequently, Scala IDE should check to see if m2eclipse-scala is installed and
