During the middle of September, 2011, Assembla decided to remove the Adventures of Garnet and all its related content from their host. For downloads and information about the game, visit our Github page.

The Adventures of Garnet is an adult oriented game, that had been hosted on Assembla since the middle of 2010. The decision to host the Adventures of Garnet on Assembla, was made after reviewing a number of available platforms, with the final decision being made based on the tools made available, but more importantly; its history of acceptance when hosting adult games.

We were therefor surprised to find that the access to our project space was suddenly denied, missing like it never was there. It soon became clear that this wasn't a temporary issue, Assembla had instead decided to completely remove the Adventures of Garnet from their services.

As a result of Assembla's actions any content that existed in the wiki, issue tracker (work planned, processed and done), and messages are lost. This means that an important part of the project's documentation, history, tracking and long term planning, is lost forever, something we can never hope to ever recreate.

Since there were requests for SVN access by our users, we did create a central repository on our Assembla host. Due to some initial technical limitations, this ended up being more than a mirror, and an important way for our users to access our content. For us, the SVN repository was a fork of the project, kept separate and unique from our main branch. It was therefor with some horror that we found that Assembla decided to annihilate our centralized SVN repository without warning or ability to rebuild. We can't begin to phantom what impact this would have had on a project that used Assembla as their central and only server.

We find these actions to mean that Assembla has a complete lack of interest in respecting and honoring other peoples' work and effort. At the very least, we find Assembla's action to show that they have no empathy or understanding as to the time and effort put down by others. Since there is obviously no interest in the well being of developers and their work from Assembla's side, we find their intent to work as a platform, to harbor other peoples' blood, sweat and tears; confusing and worrying.

We accept that Assembla has the ultimate say in this matter, and that as a free Open Source project, we were not a direct revenue stream for them. It's within their right to pull content from their own servers, at any time. Even if this is the case, we must bring the role of Assembla in the Open Source space up for question. Assembla has shown a lack of maturity with no understanding or responsibility when working with Open Source projects, keeping their reasoning opaque, and their actions fickle; either being completely unaware, or perversely malicious, of the major consequences their actions have towards those they're suppose to harbor.

It's an important reminder that we must all be very careful when choosing who we trust with the labor of our love.
