One dead simple solution:
if (receive.isDefinedAt(msg)) receive(msg)
else mailboxForNotYetDefinedMessages.add(msg)

// Periodically do:
val msg = mailboxForNotYetDefinedMessages.poll
if (msg != null && receive.isDefinedAt(msg)) receive(msg)
