Happy Independence Day!!

As part of Independence Day I released the newest release candidate for OpenRPG 1.7.9. This new RC updates CherryPy to quality standards so both Servers and Clients can run it. Dj also re opened his image server so users are completely free to browse and load local media.

There is one change that current users will need to do in order for this change to complete when they update. They will need to update their Settings file to include two new entries in the network. The good news is, that change has already been made to the default settings XML file, so users can find that in the /Templates/ Folder and make the appropriate changes and new users need not worry.. I apologize for even this minor edit.

Version 1.7.8 released

Open RPG 1.7.8 is taking what was good from 1.7.1 and what was good from 1.7.7 and putting them together while removing some bugs. Image threading, something that was lost in the update to 1.7.7, has returned and it is working great! Pretty Print, a feature that I can't seem to find in even 1.7.1 now works. Images can be moved to the Gametree. For users of 1.7.5 you can now use the minis layer. For users of 1.7.7, loading large images will show you a small Fetching PNG while the image loads. For users of 1.7.1, you may experience less loading time as you enter rooms and servers.

Bugs reported so far that are caused by 1.7.8

  1. Can't enter rooms on a server by pressing button (double click on room worked fine) --- fixed
  2. Right-clicking on mini with a Mac was buggy --- fixed together with some other Mac map issues
  3. The auto-updater overwrites custom die rollers. --- wont fix for this release, workaround is make the file read-only (this will abort the auto-update).
  4. init2 plugin broken. --- solution ready for testing get the new xxinit2.py file early

Improvements

  1. Image Threading. This is the biggest bug since 1.7.5 and I am determined to squash it. Image threading allows you to load an image into a Queue so large images do not freeze your software. If you are using 1.7.7 and the software grays out, this stop that from happening.
  2. Increased efficiency. The new build is very light and loads server, room, and player lists pretty fast. I like that!
  3. Pretty Print is fixed!!
  4. Images can be moved to and from the Gametree.

Future Plans (1.7.9)

  1. David made a cool addition with the drag and drop feature. Let's use it more!! One addition I would like to add is the ability to drag and drop minis from the Mini Lib window.
  2. Meta Server down issues. When the Meta Server goes down the software can hang. I propose we fix this. By creating a layer that asks if the meta is up first we can prevent the software from hanging. By adding into that a small tab of favorite servers we can still connect while the meta is down. Good times!
  3. Apparently Linux has an Aptitude Repo for OpenRPG. Unfortunately it is borked!! Let's re-acquire that and update that!! Good times for linux users to simply run apt-get install openrpg.

Past Announcements

Shortly after the release of my DEV Build 1 DJ handed co ownership of the Assembla trac over to me (sirebral). This means I will be helping develop OpenRPG. We currently have a discussion on the Mayhem Gaming boards about the directions we are going to take with OpenRPG. The main focus right now is to create a stable, user friendly, out of the box experience for all users.

As the developer I have also created a new workspace for the release candidates. The Dev Build 1 is my first 1.7.8 RC. With this new space (which will be modified in due time to reflect it's position as an RC home), users will be able to update from the RC trac and test the new build, without a holding hand from the developers. Users will also be able to revert back to the stable version without a big problem.

Thanks DJ, Chris, and everyone else!!

I must apologize to the OpenRPG users, I have been MIA and will continue to be for the foreseeable future. RL issues have been keeping me offline and away from my computer and will continue to do so though most of the summer I believe
