Invalid .zip file for Pious Paladin

    • Status: Invalid
    • Priority: Normal (3)
    • Component: -
    • Estimate: None/Small/Medium/Large None
Not really a software issue, but definitely an accessibility issue.

The Pious-beta.zip file linked at http://www.knowledgearcana.com/download-traipse will not open under either 7zip or unzip. After digging into the issue a bit I discovered what I believe to be the problem.

    From the 7-zip FAQ:

"Why can't 7-Zip open some ZIP archives?

In 99% of these cases it means that the archive contains incorrect headers. Other ZIP programs can open some archives with incorrect headers, since these programs just ignore errors.

If you have such archive, please don't call the 7-Zip developers about it. Instead try to find the program that was used to create the archive and inform the developers of that program that their software is not ZIP-compatible.

There are also some ZIP archives that were encoded with methods unsupported by 7-Zip, for example, WAVPack (WinZip)."

Programs like winzip, winrar, and chilkat won't usually have a problem with the file, but it can be confusing for people who don't use such programs. I run Ubuntu and most programs I have access to reject it.

Please re-zip the file with a different program.

Status changed from New to Invalid
"Instead try to find the program that was used to create the archive and inform the developers of that program that their software is not ZIP-compatible." then you want to address these people. http://www.info-zip.org/Zip.html

What operating system are you using? I am guessing Windows 7. Have you tried the 'Extract All" option, or is that no longer an option in Windows 7?

I mentioned it offhandedly, I run Ubuntu Linux.

I assume that's still possible, and it would work because that accesses Winzip and Winzip is one of the programs that doesn't care. The default unzip program on Ubuntu does though.

    I'll shoot them an email.

P.S. It works for me on Windows XP with 7zip and with Extract All. I think you have a corrupt or incomplete download. Or you have a different problem entirely.

Interesting, info-zip appear to make unzip. I'm going to experiment a little and see if I can figure this out. Other files I've tried work fine.

The file is over 60MB. Make sure you have a complete download. I cannot answer this question. Also .. I've moved to https://getsatisfaction.com/mml because Assembla basically told me I need to rely on them to remove comment spam, even with a paid account.

If I don't reply I am not ignoring you.

Ah. That does seem to be the problem. I tried downloading it multiple times, but I see now that the size is inconsistent and not as big as it should be. Thanks for your help, I should be able to manage now.

I tried signing up to your other site but it didn't like my IP- I'll try again later.
