Ponto is an open source software for managing thesauri, classification systems, taxonomies and controlled vocabularies in general. Ponto is a working project which was born in 2007 from the partnership between the British Geological Survey in Nottingham, the Food and Agriculture Organization in Rome and the Joint Research Centre in Ispra, Italy. Since 2009 the National Central Library in Florence joined the project, bringing into the work a great experience.

Ponto has different important characteristics. Its data base was inspired by the data model proposed in the British Standard 8723 for thesauri construction. It is compatible with SKOS data format. It supports both Oracle and MySQL db. Besides it manages different thesauri at the same time, enabling mapping between them.
