FOV Loader Plugin for x-Plane 8/9/10

A small plugin for x-plane flight simulator. It enables to assign specific Field-of-view (FOV) setting per aircraft.

Background

Problem: aircraft developers use different techniques and build 3D Panels that work best at various Field-of-view (FOV) values, some at the default 45° some need 50°, some even more. The FOV can be changed in x-planes rendering settings. Though this is inconvenient to use: ou change a value, close the settings, see how it fits and change again etc. And then you load another aircraft and start from scratch.

FOV-Loader to the rescue

Installation

To install, grab the FOV-Loader_xyz.xpl for your OS from the "Files" section and put it into the X-Plane/Resources/plugins folder (X-Plane 8).

In X-Plane 9 you can install the plugin in the same way - just drop the FOV-Loader_xyz.xlp in the plugins folder OR you can create a subfolder in "plugins", name it FOV-Loader and put the XPL file into that subfolder and name it - depending on the version - "win.xpl" "mac.xpl" "lin.xpl". This helps to keep the plugins folder organized :)

Usage

Unlike the x-plane rendering settings this plugin is a small window that you can move around the screen. You can see your aircraft panel behind. Change the value, hit or "Apply" and immediately see how the visible panel area changes. Play with the value until you have found the right one and hit "Save". The chosen value is applied and on your hard drive, in the folder of the aircraft, a small text file "fov.ini" gets created that contains just the number you entered.

Now, next time you load this aircraft, the plugin will read this "fov.ini" file, read the value out of it and apply it in X-Plane. You can copy this file to other aircraft folders that need the same FOV value.

Load another aircraft with a different fov.ini and see how the view changes to match the given FOV value.

Easy, he?
