About Configurations and Template Spaces

Eliminate setup work by giving you template spaces which contain only the tools, content, and configuration that you need.   Assembla workspaces can contain a lot of different tools and configurations.  This flexibility allows you to provide new team members with a complete package of tools and information when they join the space.

When you select a space from our catalog, you are making a copy of a template space.  You can also make a copy of any space by selecting the "Copy this space" link in the footer.

Ways to use template spaces

You can use template spaces to:

Save time: Your own personal template will save time when starting new projects.

Make money: Make this part of an affiliate relationship that serves your community and get commissions from Assembla.

Support a community: Provide users of a software framework with a template space that includes the things they need to get a fast start on a customization project - code, build scripts, tools, and documentation.

Promote your ideas and branding: Add your banner and link to the template.   Users of your frameworks, content, and ticket workflow will know where to go for help.

Collect proposals, ideas, contest submissions: Set up a template space in your portfolio that includes proposal instructions and templates.  New submissions will automatically be added to your portfolio, where you can communicate with your respondents and manage with the list with stages.

What we copy from a template space

A new copy of a template space will be pre-configured with the following items:

  • Tool list
  • Default landing tab
  • Banner URL and custom style
  • Most tool settings, including Ticket custom fields and filters, and Webhooks configurations
  • Portfolio membership
  • Repository content from Subversion and Git repositories
  • Wiki pages
  • Files
  • Milestones

We do not copy tickets, messages, chat messages, team members, or permissions.

How to create a template space

You can use any space as a template space.  We recommend starting with a new space.

  1. In the Admin tab, add and remove tools.  Include only the tools that you need.  Sort the tabs, and select the default landing tab.  Adjust the branding. You can add your own banner and link on the "Appearance" form.
  2. If you are publishing a code framework, add code in the repository.
  3. If you are using Tickets, configure the custom fields, default filter, custom filters, and default milestones.
  4. Configure any additional tools.  If you are using Webhooks for integration, you should configure the post format.   If you are collecting responses in a portfolio, add the template as a portfolio member.
  5. Distribute forms and document templates in the file list.
  6. Write setup instructions on the wiki home page.

How to add it to the catalog

Use the "Add Configurations" link on the catalog page to submit and manage your catalog entries.  You can distribute the catalog page link to your community.  After we approve the package, it will appear in our catalog with the tags that you select, and we will pay commissions.

How to add it to a portfolio

In the Admin-Tools page of your template space, add the portfolio Member tool, then in the Member tab join the template space to the Portfolio.  In the Portfolio space, go to the PortfolioManager-MembersPortfolio Manager-Members page and click the Manage link in the row for the template space, then select the checkbox that says "Show this as a template when making new spaces in this portfolio" and click the Submit button.
