How to get Paid the Assembla Way

Assembla has developed a unique payment system that is easy for developers to use and takes much of the stress and the cost out of the process.

  1. Time tracking
    1. Every time you work, you need to track your time and work tasks. Click on the TIME tab after you log in.
    2. You can use our timer or manually enter your time log.
    3. To use the timer

i.Click on START TIMER

ii.Click on ADD TASK to begin working on a new task and make sure the task is being added to correct job and workspace.

iii.To work on an exiting task, check the box next to that task. on the name of the task

    1. To manually add a task, enter a description of the task done and the hours spent, and confirm the space is correct; press ADD ENTRY

  1. Submit statements
    1. Every Monday, click on the JOBS tab to see your existing statements. Click on the current statement to review it.
    2. EDIT the statement if necessary and SUBMIT the statement once it is correct.

  1. Payments to your Assembla account
    1. When you begin a project with Assembla, an account is created for you. Each Friday, funds from that week’s statement are added to your account.
    2. At your leisure, you may withdraw funds according to a wide range of options. Just click on WITHDRAW FUNDS
    3. To withdraw funds to your Paypal account, click on that link and enter the amount and your Paypal account email address. Note that Paypal charges 2.9% transaction fee which will be deducted from your funds.
    4. To withdraw funds by direct deposit to a US bank using the ACH clearing house, click on that link and enter all the pertinent information. There is no fee for this service. Please consult your bank to see if they are able to accept an ACH payment.
    5. To withdraw funds by a bank wire to your bank, click on that link and enter all the pertinent information. There is a $15 fee for this service to US banks and a $30 fee to non-US banks, in addition to any fees that your bank may charge you. Please consult your bank for more information on wire transfers.
    6. To withdraw your funds with a mailed check, click on that link and enter all the pertinent information. There is a $15 fee for this service. Please check with your bank and local government offices to see if you are liable for any other fees on such a transaction.

  1. Payment in Advance
    1. Assembla pays job trials one-half in advance. Once a job agreement is finalized, submit a statement for one-half of the expected hours of the first two weeks. This will be paid to your account as described above.

  1. Disputes
    1. There are links on the TIME and MONEY pages which allow you to dispute a payment or billing issue. Follow the instructions if any become necessary.
    2. Assembla’s Master Services Agreement guarantees that you will be paid for work completed. You do not need to worry should the client does not pay Assembla; that becomes an issue between us and the client and you will not be held hostage to the negotiation.

  1. Payment FAQ
    • Do I have to pay a fee or percentage of the project I work?
      No. All fees are paid by the buyer.

    • Can I get paid in euros or some other currency other than dollars?
      No. At present all payments and all financial considerations on our site are computed in US dollars.

    • Do I get paid during the trial?Do I get paid for setting up the development environment and downloading?
      Yes and yes. Please see Getting Hired the Assembla Way.

    • Do I have to pay taxes on my earnings from Assembla? Do you withhold taxes? Am I an employee of Assembla?
      You are an independent contractor. We do not withhold any taxes. For US citizens and foreign residents, Assembla will file a form 10-99 (or similar) if you have earned $600 or more in a calendar year. For foreign nationals, please check with your appropriate governmental agencies regarding your tax responsibilities.

    • Do you have to pay me as an individual? Can I set up a company and be paid through that because it is more advantageous from a tax perspective?
      That is up to you. We can make payment to an individual or to a corporation. Please consult your legal and tax professionals and inform us of how to pay you.

    • How much should I charge for my services?
      That is a question that you need to answer based on your needs, experience, skill, local conditions etc. Information on pay rates and salaries is available is numerous places, and can also be approximated by looking at rates and salaries noted in various job listing sites. Each Assembla user is free to charge or pay whatever rates he or she chooses.
