(originally reported by Thomas)
The Words table is supposed to contain every word only one time. This does not always work correctly.

To reproduce:
Use the word splitter on a single table and field, and close the word splitter. Reopen the word splitter, and select a different table or field to split in the same database. Already existing words in the Words table will not be re-used, but doubles will be created.

Dear Andre

Sorry - missed this mail first.

I'll try to send the data, but the file is big and I am in a place without good connections. May be it is easier to use the data of Edwin.

Round jaccard = choice which similarity is used from the raw jaccard query.

Ok, I understand the bug: in the old version all three are equal as they all were treated as unvalued.

In the new version this still the case for the roundjaccard and the unvalued. But not equal to the old unvalued one. May be the only problem in the new version is that you now do not correctly calclate the unvalued.

Best
Peter

Peter,

Thanks for your thorough test! That is very helpful.
Could you please send me the dataset you worked on. I don't know what "rounded jaccard" is exactly.

As noted in the email, the new version fixes a bug where the value of the link was (sometimes?) not taken into account. That is: the network was treated as an unvalued network. That is obviously incorrect. It is strange however that the 'unvalued' version is not equal in both. I think this needs a bit more analysis.

Dear all,

I tried the new version and it comes up with completely different community structures than the old did. I did therefore some testing.

1. Whereas the old version created 18 communities on the highest level, the new gives 50.

2. If the new one is correct, the analyses done with the old are wrong. James, what about chemistry and robotics? Edwin, was the esocialscience analysis done with the old version?

3. the old version gives the same outcomes using the jaccard, roundjaccard and unvalued
4. the new version gives the same for roundjaccard and unvalued, but a different one for valued.
Both seem therefore problematic!!

please comments!

best regards

peter

Currently, you can only run through the record grouper tool in one session. Because processing can take a very long time, and the manual step after processing can be labour intensive, it would be beneficial to be able to store and resume while being in the process of approving the suggested matches. This would also make it possible to divide up the work of checking the groupings, both over time and over people.

Matching addresses is a time consuming process. Everything is matched with everything, and that makes for a lot of work. It might help to filter the items to match by first splitting the address into seperate words, and then calculating a Jaccard index for each address combination. Only those that have a sufficiently high Jaccard score would need to be processed further. Perhaps a speed increase would be possible this way. Currently, processing 90k addressing takes about 7 hours on a quad core machine.

For research logs to be complete, they should include how exactly the results were reached. Such logs are important to enable the researcher to track back, find mistakes, repeat steps, etc.
It would be helpful if the tools would support such work by outputting user-readable logs.
As an extension to this, it would be nice if:

* The logs would also be machine-readable, so tools can re-load settings from the logs
* The logs would be automatically stored with a project, if the files/folders related to that project are known. Perhaps we should develop a project tracking tool? Or search for a good, existing one?

When selecting a word in the right-hand screen that is similar to the list of words in the left-hand screen, the word under which all similar words will be group changes to the word I have just clicked. But it does the same for words that are unselected!
For example, if the word on the left-hand side is "integrate" and on the right-hand side I have the options "integrates", "integrated", "integration", and "integral" and I unselect "integral", the recordgrouper will want to group all the selected words under "integral".
Why not simply group them under the word on the left-hand side of the screen by default, unless otherwise indicated?

Sometimes, it is useful to re-use the coordinates that Pajek calculates for network layout. For this, it would be nice if these coordinates could be read back into the database. This would be easy if the labels would just contain the original ID values for the vertices.

The data could then be used for tricks like overlaying networks for time slicing.

It would be cool to be able to output time slices to Pajek. That is possible using the notation documented in the Pajek manual. There are two options there: time events and time intervals; the latter probably more suited here.

The input would be the option to select a field that contains the start moment (encoded in a number) and optionally an end moment. If there is no end moment, it would be "until the end".

Thresholds are now often set to values that are "known to work well" or determined by experimentation to see what still yields a workable result set.
It would be useful to have a tool to visualize the structure of the network (in terms of connectedness, number of partitions, percentage of vertices still connected at all, etc.) at different thresholds. This way, a more educated choice can be made on where to set a threshold.

As reported by Thomas:

The ISI parser has a problem with records with multi-part surnames that only contain the abbreviated author field (AU). The problem is that in the pre-processing stage of the parsing, the comma's and dots are removed (isiparser.cpp line 140), but these should be used again in the post-processing stage (line 283).

The record grouper currently does essentially two things:

# It determines a score for a relationship between two objects, like words, names or addresses based on an algorithm
# It makes it possible to select these object based on these scores to group them into groups in the database.

The Record grouper should be modified to concentrate on the second task, and let the calculation of scores be an independent task. It would be nice if it could be integrated in the UI, but that is not essential.

It would be nice to have a calculator component that presents an interface to the user to choose the actual calculator to use: Jaccard, Salton, Tanimoto or Cosine.
Idealy, it would have both a selector input and output, and present a user interface only if the input is not connected. This way, you can have the interface be presented only once, and through the selection output connected to the selection inputs of the other components, select the calculator for all of these components in one go.
